Faculty Position in Software Engineering

Universidad Católica de Chile

The Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, one of the leading academic institutions in Latin America, ranked first in QS Latin America University Ranking 2022, invites outstanding candidates for a full-time faculty position in the area of Software Engineering at the Department of Computer Science.

Software Engineering is the systematic application of practical methods for constructing high-quality software, with implications for both academic and industrial environments. This discipline finds its roots not only in the academic realm but also as a cornerstone of industrial advancements. Software Engineering encompasses foundational aspects like software design and quality while also embracing the vanguard areas of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Duties

The selected faculty will be expected to uphold our tradition of academic excelence. This includes delivering high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Annually, the faculty typically immerse themselves in teaching three distinct courses. Two of these are foundational undergraduate courses in software engineering, such as Software Engineering and Software System Architecture, along with one graduate-level course associated with their area of research. He or she will also be expected to inspire students interested in conducting their own research projects.

In terms of research, the successful candidate will be expected to develop their own line of research, supervise Ph.D. students, obtain relevant research funding from the public and/or private sector, and collaborate with existing research initiatives. This activity should translate into keeping up with the current quality and quantity of publications by the faculty of the Department of Computer Science.

Additional duties include knowledge transfer, outreach, and university administrative tasks.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science with emphasis on Software Engineering, at the time of hiring. Any postdoctoral or academic experience should be stated in the application. The applicant must have a high potential for scholarly productivity, proven teaching capacity, and the ability and willingness to work collaboratively in teams.

Research experience in topics that are already being addressed by faculty members is desirable. While our canvas of research is vast, we hold in high esteem those who have dabbled in areas like cloud computing architectures, distributed systems, big data processing, and the emerging realms of empirical software engineering, software mining repositories, software visualization, and software evolution. Experience in any of the following subjects is also desirable: automation and improvement of software tests, automatic code generation and intelligent programming wizards, software development cost and time estimation, elicitation of requirements through knowledge discovery, and capturing design patterns in various environments and settings.

Candidates from areas other than those mentioned above will be considered, provided that their research focus is Software Engineering.

Candidates do not need to be fluent in Spanish at the time of application, but should be prepared to learn the language well enough to teach in this language in the short term (two years maximum). English is a requirement.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to all aspects of academic life and the public good of the institution. They must be highly motivated to continuously improve their teaching skills, have a genuine interest in getting involved with our graduate programs (specially the doctoral program), and be able to develop and maintain an active research agenda leading to high-quality publications, securing research grants, generating and participating in interdisciplinary projects, leading scientific and industry-liaison initiatives, strengthening and creating national and international academic networks, etc. The candidate will also be expected to create new undergraduate and graduate courses and teach traditional courses in related areas.

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit the following documents to vacantes-academicas@ing.puc.cl (in the email subject line, please indicate: Faculty Position in Software Engineering; see note A) by November 30th, 2023 (late applications will be considered until the position is filled).

  1. A research statement (in English) indicating the immediate and long-term goals of the applicant’s research plan and detailing potential collaboration networks with other researchers and plans for interactions with scientists in Chile and other countries.
  2. A teaching statement of purpose (in English) indicating why the applicant should be considered for the position and the plans for teaching. The applicant should be as specific as possible by providing examples of the plan to transfer knowledge to undergraduate and graduate students.
  3. An updated curriculum vitae (in English, see note B).
  4. If available, copies of five recent Web of Science publications that are relevant to the context of the application (see note C)
  5. Note A:
The applicant will get a response from this email address confirming that the documents have been received.

Note B:
The CV must be organized as follows:

i. Personal information: name, address, contact telephone number (with country and city codes), email address, web page (if any).

ii. Education: all academic and professional degrees, indicating the granting institutions and dates. If the applicant is currently enrolled in a doctoral program, please indicate the expected date for the degree.

iii. Educational experience (university or institution, courses taught and years).

iv. Professional experience (employer, duties, years).

v. Research:

a. List of Web of Science journal publications (see note C).

b. List of other publications such as reports, books or book chapters, conferences attended, research projects participated in, patents, etc.

vi. Other: awards, computer skills, languages, and any other relevant background information.

Note C:
Please avoid padding the list with other publications, such as those published in journals not indexed in the Web of Science database, conference presentations and alike.

Once the complete set of application materials has been received, the applicant will be contacted within two months and informed whether the application has been accepted for further consideration. If this initial screening is successful, the candidate will be asked to continue the process following the steps described in Appendix 1.
